Zero-Drop vs Low-Drop for Ultras: Altra, Topo and Traditional

Zero-Drop vs Low-Drop for Ultras: Altra, Topo and Traditional

Heel-to-toe drop is a load-distribution choice, not a quality ranking, and no drop number wins an ultra. Zero-drop shoes (Altra builds its whole line at 0 mm) and low-drop shoes (Topo mostly sits at 0 to 5 mm) put the ankle in a more dorsiflexed position and shift load toward the calf and Achilles. Traditional 8 to 12 mm shoes move some of that load the other way. Both work over 100 miles, and plenty of buckles have been earned in each. Three things actually matter. First, if you are drawn to Altra, check whether you want the drop or the toe box, because those are separable and confusing them leads to buying the wrong shoe. Second, changing drop is a tissue adaptation on a scale of weeks to months, not runs. Third, do not make the change inside a race build. The transition schedule below is the useful part of this article; the philosophy is not.

What drop is, and what it is not

Drop is heel stack height minus forefoot stack height, in millimetres. That is all. It is independent of three things people routinely confuse it with.

Stack height is total cushioning underfoot. A 30 mm zero-drop shoe and a 20 mm zero-drop shoe feel nothing alike.

Rocker is the curvature of the sole. A high-stack, heavily rockered zero-drop shoe rolls you forward and can feel less calf-intensive than a flat low-stack 4 mm shoe. Rocker often matters more to how a shoe feels than drop does.

Toe box width is a last shape, not a drop. Altra's FootShape last is the reason many ultrarunners buy the brand, and it is available on shoes at other drops from other makers.

Roughly where the market sits, with the caveat that brands change drop between versions and you should check the current spec sheet for any model you are actually buying:

The mechanism, stated honestly

Lower the heel relative to the forefoot and the ankle sits in more dorsiflexion through stance, which lengthens the calf-Achilles complex and increases its time under tension. Raise the heel and some of that demand moves up the chain. That direction is well established and is the reason calf and Achilles soreness is the classic symptom of switching to zero-drop too fast.

The magnitude is not knowable from a spec sheet. It depends on your gait, your speed, the gradient, the stack, the rocker and how much of the race you spend hiking. Anyone quoting you a precise percentage increase in Achilles load per millimetre of drop is selling something. Treat drop as a dial that changes which tissue does more work, and plan the transition around that direction rather than around a number.

What actually changes over an ultra

Steep uphill hiking already puts your ankle in deep dorsiflexion for hours. On a climb-heavy course, a low or zero drop compounds a demand the terrain is placing on the same tissue anyway, which is why calf problems in zero-drop shoes tend to show up at hour 12 on a mountain course rather than in a 10-mile test run. Using poles helps the legs overall but does not remove that specific loading.

Long descents are the mirror image. Some runners find a little more heel material more forgiving on repeated braking, particularly late in a hundred; others find a wide, low, stable platform gives better ground feel and fewer rolled ankles. Foot swelling is the third factor and the one that sends people to Altra in the first place. Feet reliably get bigger over 20-plus hours, and a roomy toe box that felt sloppy at the start feels correct at mile 70. That is a last-shape benefit, not a drop benefit. Roomier toe boxes also change your sock fit. The transition schedule

Here is the arithmetic, built from stated assumptions rather than from a load formula.

Assumptions: you run 40 miles a week, you have no current Achilles, calf or plantar symptoms, and you have at least 12 weeks before anything that matters. The new shoe starts at about 10 percent of weekly volume and grows by roughly 10 percentage points per build week, on flat, easy, non-technical ground first, with a down week every fourth week. Three rules govern the table. The long run moves into the new shoe last, not first. Sustained descents come after the long run, because eccentric loading is where the damage accumulates. And the schedule pauses, rather than continues, if calf or Achilles soreness is worse on waking than it was the previous evening, or if it lasts more than 48 hours.

That is roughly a three-month process to arrive at a shoe you can race a long day in, which is exactly why the timing question matters more than the shoe question.

Who should not switch mid-cycle

  • Anyone inside about ten weeks of a goal race. There is no compressed version of the table above that is worth the risk of arriving at the start line with a sore Achilles.
  • Anyone with current or recent Achilles tendinopathy, plantar heel pain, or a calf strain in the last six months. This is a conversation for a physiotherapist or sports-medicine clinician, not a gear decision.
  • Anyone in the peak weeks of a build, running back-to-back weekends. Peak weeks are the worst possible place to add a novel tissue stress.
  • Anyone whose actual complaint is a crowded toe box, numb toes or black toenails. Buy a wider last at your current drop and skip the adaptation entirely; the fit and blister side is in the foot-care guide.
  • Anyone who is switching because a faster friend runs Altras. That is not a reason.

If the calves complain

Back the new shoe down to the last week that felt fine and hold there for two weeks rather than pushing through. Keep the old shoe in the rotation for long runs and descents. Add eccentric calf work two or three times a week, get out of running shoes after long sessions, and treat a pair of recovery slides as the cheap end of that habit rather than a treatment.

Pain that is sharp, localised to the tendon, worse in the morning, or accompanied by stiffness for the first ten minutes of every run is not adaptation soreness. Stop the transition and get it looked at.

Rotation is the answer most people actually want

The most useful outcome of this comparison is usually not picking a drop but running two. Alternating a low-drop shoe and a higher-drop shoe across the week varies the loading pattern instead of pounding one tissue in one geometry every single run, and it doubles as a natural rotation for midsole recovery.

Practically, keep one shoe for easy and flat, one for long and steep, and log the mileage on each pair separately. The short version

Pick drop for what your body tolerates and your course demands, not for a philosophy. If you already run happily at 8 mm and your feet fit, there is no prize for going to zero. If you want the toe box, buy the toe box. If you genuinely want the drop change, start it in an off-season base block, follow a schedule like the one above, and let the long runs and the descents be the last things to change.

Is zero-drop better for ultramarathons?

No drop number is better; it changes which tissues do more work. Zero and low drop increase demand on the calf and Achilles and reduce it higher up the chain, which suits some runners and courses and not others. Hundred-mile races are finished in every drop on the market, so choose based on what your body tolerates and what your course demands.

How long does it take to transition to zero-drop shoes?

Plan on roughly three months if you want to race in them.
