For rocky, rooty, off-camber trail, the shoe that works for most runners is a 4 to 5 mm lug on a genuinely sticky rubber (Vibram Megagrip, Salomon Contagrip, La Sportiva FriXion), either a rock plate or enough stack to do a plate's job, a heel that locks without a tourniquet, and a toebox with room for the foot you have at hour eight rather than the foot you had at the start. On those criteria the current picks are the Hoka Speedgoat 6 for mixed rock and roots, the La Sportiva Bushido III for scree and slab where precision matters more than cushion, the Salomon Speedcross 6 for mud and soft ground, and the Altra Lone Peak 9 for runners who want ground feel, zero drop and a wide forefoot. Two rules sit under that table: lug depth is a surface question, not a "more is better" question, and the rubber compound decides wet-rock grip far more than lug depth does.
Lug depth: match the tread to the surface
Lug depth is the number that gets quoted and the one that is most often misapplied.
- 3 to 4 mm is a hardpack, slickrock and dry-desert lug. It gives more contact area on rock, runs quieter on the road sections that link trailheads, and wears slower. Deeper lugs on slab actually reduce the rubber touching the ground.
- 4 to 5 mm is the mixed-terrain sweet spot and what most of the shoes in the table run. It bites into loose dirt and roots, still has enough contact on rock, and survives a season.
- 5 to 7 mm and beyond is a mud and soft-ground lug (the Speedcross 6 and Mutant live here). Deep, widely spaced chevrons shed clay and grass. On rock those same lugs squirm, and on pavement they feel like walking on marbles.
Spacing matters as much as depth: tight patterns pack with mud and become a slick, open patterns clear with each stride. If your home trails are clay after rain, look at spacing first.
Rock plates and stack: two ways to stop a stone
A rock plate is a thin sheet of TPU or dense foam laid between the outsole and the midsole so a pointed rock loads a wider area of your foot instead of one metatarsal. It is the reason a thin, low shoe like the Bushido III or the Lone Peak 9 (Altra's StoneGuard) can run all day on talus without bruising.
Max-cushion trail shoes take the other route: no plate, but 30-plus millimetres of foam under the forefoot that does the same job by depth. The Speedgoat 6 and Olympus 6 are in that camp. The trade is feel. A plated low-stack shoe tells you exactly where the rock is; a tall foam shoe lets you stop caring. For a technical 50K where you are running every step, plate-and-feel is often faster. For a technical 100-miler where you will be walking the rocky parts at 3 a.m. anyway, cushion wins.
One failure mode: tall stack on off-camber rock raises the ankle's lever arm. If you roll ankles, keep stack moderate or choose a wide, flared midsole base (the Speedgoat's outrigger shape exists for this reason).
Drop and stack on steep ground
Drop is the heel-to-forefoot height difference. Rough groupings in current trail lineups:
- 0 to 4 mm: Altra (zero), Hoka (typically 4 to 5), Topo (0 to 5). Lower drop tends to move the landing toward the midfoot and loads the calf and Achilles more, which matters on long climbs.
- 6 to 8 mm: La Sportiva (6 on the Bushido III and Prodigio), Salomon's Genesis and Sense Ride lines. The middle ground, and the easiest to move into from road shoes.
- 10 mm: Salomon Speedcross 6, La Sportiva Mutant, most Brooks trail shoes. Heel-forward runners and steep descents, where a higher heel keeps the calf from being asked to do everything.
The rule from most coaches is simple: do not change drop inside the final twelve weeks before a goal race, and change it by 4 mm or less per shoe purchase. Zero drop is a fine place to end up; it is a bad place to arrive by surprise at mile 40.
Fit by terrain: heel lock, midfoot wrap, toebox
Technical terrain punishes fit errors that a fire road forgives.
Heel. On steep descents the foot slides forward and the heel lifts. You want a padded, moderately deep heel cup and the ability to run a heel-lock lace (the runner's loop through the top eyelets). Salomon's Quicklace is fast but cannot lock zones independently; if you need a tight heel and a loose forefoot, traditional laces or a BOA dial (La Sportiva Jackal II BOA) do it better.
Midfoot. Sideways movement on off-camber rock is where sprains start. Salomon's Sensifit wings and La Sportiva's narrower last are good at holding the midfoot; Altra's foot-shaped last holds less and relies on the lace.
Toebox. This is the terrain-versus-ultra tension. A precise, tapered toebox (Bushido III, Speedcross 6) is superb for edging on rock and terrible when your foot swells at hour six. A foot-shaped toebox (Altra, Topo, and to a lesser degree the Speedgoat and Mafate) gives up some rock precision and buys you toenails. For anything over 50K on technical ground, lean toward the wider option and get the precision back from lacing.
Sizing. A thumb's width in front of the longest toe when standing; a half size beyond that for ultras. Try on in the afternoon, in race socks.
Outsole rubber: the spec that decides wet rock
Wet granite, wet roots and wet bridges are where trail shoes actually differ. Three compounds dominate:
- Vibram Megagrip (Hoka Speedgoat and Mafate, Altra Olympus and Timp, the Lone Peak 9+): the consensus benchmark for wet rock. Litebase versions shave weight with a thinner backing.
- Salomon Contagrip (Speedcross, Genesis, Sense Ride): the MA compound is good on dirt and reasonable on wet rock; the TA on the Speedcross is optimised for soft ground.
- La Sportiva FriXion (Bushido, Prodigio, Mutant): a climbing-shoe heritage compound, excellent on dry rock and good on wet.
Altra's in-house MaxTrac (on the standard Lone Peak 9) is the compound most often criticised for wet-rock grip; if your trails are wet rock, look at the Megagrip version.
The picks, honestly
Hoka Speedgoat 6. Around 5 mm drop, 5 mm Megagrip lugs, a wide flared base and a moderately roomy toebox, listed under 10 oz in a men's 9. The default answer for rocky, rooty singletrack and for anyone doing their first technical ultra. Weakness: the upper's midfoot hold is average, and precision on slab is not its game.
La Sportiva Bushido III. 6 mm drop, a forefoot rock guard, a firm and stable platform and a close, European-narrow fit. The shoe for scree, slab and ankle-testing alpine trail where you want to feel the ground. Weakness: cushion runs out for many people around the 50K mark, and the toebox is unforgiving of swell.
Salomon Speedcross 6. 10 mm drop, roughly 5 mm chevron lugs on Contagrip TA, Quicklace, snug Sensifit fit. Unmatched in mud, wet grass and soft forest floor; also the shoe least suited to rock and pavement in this list. Buy the wide version if the standard pinches.
Altra Lone Peak 9. Zero drop, about 25 mm of stack, a StoneGuard rock plate and the widest toebox here. The best choice for runners already adapted to zero drop who want ground feel with protection. Weakness: MaxTrac on wet rock; the Lone Peak 9+ with Megagrip fixes that for a little more money.
Also worth a try-on: Salomon Genesis (8 mm drop, Matryx upper, a midpoint between Speedgoat cushion and Bushido feel), Hoka Mafate Speed 4 (Speedgoat grip with more foam), Altra Olympus 6 (zero drop, max cushion, Megagrip), La Sportiva Prodigio (the softest La Sportiva).
Prices move with colourways and season; expect the mainstream models above in roughly the $140 to $185 range at full retail and previous versions substantially cheaper.
Socks and gaiters: the half of the system people skip
Technical terrain multiplies two blister mechanisms: the foot sliding forward on descents (toe blisters, black toenails) and debris entering the shoe (scree, sand, pine needles). The shoe cannot fix either; socks and gaiters can.
Toe socks put a layer of fabric between each toe, which is precisely where descent blisters form. The Injinji Trail Midweight is the standard for technical ground: enough padding under the ball of the foot for rock, a Coolmax blend that dries, and a mini-crew height that keeps grit out of the ankle. Wear the pair you will race in for the try-on, because a toe sock adds a few millimetres of forefoot volume.
Low gaiters matter on scree, sand and any race with dry, dusty descents. A pair of stretch low gaiters that hooks under the laces and closes around the ankle stops the grit that becomes a blister at mile 30. Look for a lace-hook or hook-and-loop front attachment; most modern shoes no longer have a rear gaiter tab, and a low, stretchy gaiter tolerates that better than a tall hiking gaiter.
For cold or wet technical races a merino quarter sock holds warmth when soaked in a way synthetics do not, at the cost of drying slower. And a hot spot that shows up on a long descent should get an anti-chafe balm before it becomes a blister: a small stick of Squirrel's Nut Butter lives in the vest for exactly that.
Upper durability and drainage
Technical trail shreds uppers before it wears outsoles: look for a wrapping toe bumper, a reinforced lateral forefoot, and a woven (Matryx) or ripstop upper. On creek-crossing courses, open mesh that drains beats a waterproof membrane, which holds water once it comes over the collar.
How to choose in five questions
- What is the rock-to-dirt ratio at your goal race? Mostly rock: 3 to 4 mm lugs and sticky rubber. Mostly dirt and root: 4 to 5 mm. Mud: 5 mm plus and open spacing.
- Will you be running the technical sections or hiking them? Running: plate and feel. Hiking (100-mile nights): cushion.
- What drop are you in now? Move no more than 4 mm.
- Will you be on your feet more than eight hours? Add half a size and choose the wider toebox.
- What are your feet doing at the end of long runs now? Toe blisters point to toe socks and sizing; grit blisters point to gaiters; heel blisters point to heel lock and a different last.
Get those five right and the brand on the shoe is the least important decision on the list.
