Buy the vest for the longest race with the heaviest mandatory kit on your calendar, then run it half-empty for everything shorter. In practice: a 50K needs 5 to 8 litres of stowage and 1 litre of fluid; a 100K needs 8 to 12 litres and 1 to 1.5 litres of fluid; a 100-miler with a mandatory-gear list needs a genuine 12 litres, with fluid capacity set by the longest gap between aid stations. The premium answer across all three distances is the Salomon ADV Skin 12. The budget answers are the N NEVO RHINO 12L and the RKV86, which carry the same volume for roughly a third of the money and give up flask quality, fabric stretch and fit precision to do it. That total sits in a 12 L vest at 55 to 70 percent full, which is where a stretch-fabric vest compresses well and runs quiet. In an 8 L vest the same kit is at or past capacity, and a vest at 100 percent is a vest that bounces and cannot take a jacket back without a fight.

The shorter races, by the same method:

  • 50K, supported, aid every 5 to 8 miles, no mandatory list: 1 L of fluid, 200 to 300 g of food, a light wind shell (0.5 L), phone. About 2 to 3 L stowed plus 1 L in flasks. That is why 5 to 8 L vests exist, and why a 12 L half-empty works fine.
  • 100K, aid every 6 to 10 miles, often a short mandatory list (shell, headlamp, blanket): shell 1 L, headlamp 0.2 L, blanket 0.1 L, food for three hours 0.7 L, hat and gloves for the night 0.3 L. About 3.5 to 5 L stowed plus 1 to 1.5 L of fluid. An 8 to 12 L vest.

Fluid capacity is separate from stowed volume, and the arithmetic there is the longest gap between aid stations in hours, times your fluid rate. A rate of 500 ml per hour is a common planning figure in moderate conditions and higher in heat; individual needs vary widely, so practise it in training and get professional advice if you have a medical condition that affects fluid balance. A 2.5-hour gap at 500 ml per hour is 1.25 L, so 1 L of flasks is tight and a bladder or a third flask becomes the answer.

50K: 5 to 8 litres, or a 12 L half-empty

For a first 50K on a supported course, the case for a small vest is weight and simplicity: 150 to 200 g empty, two flasks, a phone pocket, a gel pocket. The case for buying a 12 L anyway is that most 50K runners race a 50-miler within two years, and a stretch-fabric 12 L runs quiet at a 50K load. The ADV Skin 12's Sensifit body compresses to its contents; the budget vests below compress less, so at 50K they carry a little air with them.

100K: 8 to 12 litres

This is the distance where vest choice starts to matter at night. A 100K usually includes a mandatory headlamp and shell, a cold stretch between 2 and 6 a.m., and a section where aid is 8 to 10 miles apart. Twelve litres is not necessary but it is the right buy if you are ever going to a 100. The features that earn their price here: a rear pocket you can reach without removing the vest (jacket on and off), front pole loops if the course has real climbs, and flask sleeves that hold a 500 ml bottle firmly once it is half empty.

100 miles: 12 litres is the floor

Every mandatory-kit mountain 100 lands inside the table above, and the lesson from those lists is that a 12 L vest with a good rear kangaroo pocket is the minimum, while a 15 to 20 L pack is overkill unless the race requires crampons. What separates vests at this distance:

  • Bladder compatibility for the three-hour gaps in heat: a 1.5 L reservoir plus two flasks gives 2.5 L.
  • Two headlamps that are reachable in the dark. A primary such as the Petzl Actik Core and a lightweight backup both fit in a front stretch pocket on any 12 L vest, but only if that pocket is not also holding your phone.
  • A cup pocket and a trash pocket that opens one-handed.

The budget picks, honestly

Both budget vests below are 12-litre-class vests that cost roughly a third of the Salomon. They will get you through a 50K and a 100K, and plenty of runners have finished 100s in vests like them. Here is what you are trading.

The N NEVO RHINO 12L is a 12 L unisex vest that usually ships with two soft flasks and a large rear compartment, at a price that tends to sit in the $40 to $60 range. What works: the capacity is real, the rear pocket is big, and there are more zippered pockets than on the Salomon. What you give up: the body is a sewn mesh rather than a bonded stretch knit, so it compresses less at a light load and can rub at the collarbones over a long day; the included flasks are generic, tend to taste of plastic for the first few washes, and can weep at the cap; and the sternum straps are buckle-and-webbing, which adjust widely but do not stretch with breathing. Buy it, replace the flasks with a name-brand pair, and it becomes a reasonable 100K vest.

The RKV86 running vest is a similar-capacity budget vest whose distinguishing feature is detachable zipper pockets, which lets you strip it toward a 50K configuration or add storage for a 100K. Price sits in the same budget band. What works: modular pockets, generous sizing adjustment, and it ships with flasks or a bladder depending on the listing. What you give up: the same sewn-mesh feel and generic flasks, and the detachable pockets are a bounce source when full because the attachment points flex. Best for the runner who wants one vest to cover a 25K through a 100K and is willing to tune it.

Honest summary: the budget vests carry the litres. The Salomon carries them quieter, chafes less, and lasts more seasons. If you race once a year, the budget vest is the correct buy. If you train in a vest three times a week, the Salomon costs less per mile.

Flasks versus bladder by distance

  • 50K: two 500 ml flasks, nothing else.
  • 100K: two flasks, plus a third soft flask in the rear pocket for the longest gap.
  • 100 miles: two flasks plus a 1.5 L bladder for heat and long gaps, carried empty otherwise. Fill the bladder only at the aid station before the long gap; carrying 1.5 L for 100 miles because the sleeve is there is 1.5 kg of unneeded weight.

Weight, bounce and fit at full load

A vest that fits at a 50K load can bounce at a 100-mile load. Test it before race week: load the full mandatory kit and a litre of water, run a descent, and adjust. On the Salomon the fix is usually moving the sternum straps a loop lower. On the budget vests it is tightening the side webbing and moving heavy items (phone, food) to the front pockets to balance the load in back. Whichever vest, wear it for at least two long runs with the full kit; chafe points show up around hour four, not in the shop.
